What is BMI?
Body mass index is a calculated measure of body weight relative to height. For adults, BMI is commonly used as a screening measure alongside other information about a person's health.
The formula is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared.
Adult BMI categories
| Category | BMI |
|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 |
| Healthy weight | 18.5 to less than 25 |
| Overweight | 25 to less than 30 |
| Obesity | 30 or greater |
These are the standard adult CDC categories used by this calculator. Some clinical guidance uses different thresholds for particular ethnic populations, so BMI should be interpreted in context.
BMI calculator for Indian adults
BMI can be useful for a quick screening calculation, including for people in India. However, BMI does not directly measure body fat and should not be interpreted on its own.
For example, current NICE guidance uses lower BMI thresholds when assessing overweight and obesity in South Asian adults because cardiometabolic risk can occur at lower BMI values. This calculator intentionally keeps the standard adult BMI categories visible and leaves clinical interpretation to healthcare professionals.
BMI and weight-loss planning
BMI can be one data point when organizing a nutrition routine. A broader approach can also consider meals, calories, activity, hydration and progress over time.
